The Odia community lost a reputed singer (and lawyer) Sujit Mohanty. He passed away peacefully on Sunday (January 22, 2017). He belonged to the second generation (45 RPM) of gramophone recording artists behind the Akhsyaya Mohanty era. He had entertained the Odia community for more than 3 decades. The picture on the record (he had presented to me) was debuted in 1981. To many of us it is a personal loss. We express our condolence and much sympathy to the bereieved family.

Sujit Mohanty was our ‘Sir’ … our Reader in English literature in Ravenshaw College, before moving to the US in 1981. We had also shared the stage quite a few times. Despite his rich family background, he was very jovial and friendly with everyone around….. May his soul Rest In Peace …..

I was connected with Sujeet Sir in Facebook. Every Saturday morning I was used to hearing great songs of Rafi Saheb. The last song I heard from him was on Jan 21st Saturday at 22 AM, a romantic song by Mukesh, kya khoob lagti ho. On Jan 23 saw a sad note by his son posted on Face book that he is no more. I could not believe it. Music Was just one of his gifted skills. He was a muti- faceted full complete personality with numerous talents. He will be dearly missed by people who know him in this world. I offer my deep condolences for the members of the family. With fond memory of this departed glorious soul, Nrusingha Mishra

Unexpected very sudden and dad news

I came to know of Sujit when a cousin asked me to carry a note book of songs for him from India around 1993/94. Later I knew him when he came in to the OSA team as a pro-bono lawyer between 2007-2009 and participated initially in the OSA’s historic turn around. He spent a lot of hours and time in those years – to helped us keep things straight and legal – so OSA later won the court case by a few disgruntled members. This was a very stressful time for OSA and he really helped us. At times I remember calling him at mid night, so we can respond to the litigants in time, next morning. Pandey & We who were involved surely appreciate his contribution and appreciate it. I hope & wish his family may be able to bear his sudden departure and irreparable loss, with dignity. May his soul RIP.

First of all ogadmin please correct the date to 2017. (Dad news must be sad news, slight correction.) I was in Montreal Canada while Sujeet/Sujit was in the States from the years 1981 till 2009 and annual visits thereafter. I know he did not always have the time to attend OSA conventions. We both attended the one in Ontario 1986. His classmate and Sandip accurately describe his helpful nature and his abilities.
